Air Conditioning R22 Replacement & Disposal

If you have a cooling unit that is over 10 years of age, there is a high likelihood it utilizes R22 refrigerant. From the end of 2014, UK regulations in place to meet obligations under the Montreal Protocol will make it illegal for anybody to service or maintain a cooling system utilizing R22 refrigerant. This refrigerant contains environmentally harmful compounds known as HCFCs or hydrochlorofluorocarbons. R-22 refrigerants are great, but they do come with a catch: they are very detrimental to the environment.

Are there any alternatives to R22 cooling systems?

Scientists have certainly answered the call by developing viable R-22 alternatives that are capable of producing similar or even more impressive results. They do not cause ozone damages or other environmental harm. The most popular replacements are R-410a or R-421a coolant.

What are my options?

1. Retrofit your cooling system

We can attempt to replace your R22 coolant and retrofit your system. This is the cheapest option, but some units were created to work with low pressure, and thus, many of them won’t have the ability to stand up to the stress that a retrofit will invariably entail. Issues like coolant leaks in the condenser coil and in the condenser itself are likely to occur. 2. Replace only the indoor and outdoor units, leaving the existing wiring and pipework in place

You can choose to only replace the indoor and outdoor units depending on your AC system. This will improves efficiency and reduce the running costs of your system. This option is cheaper and less disruptive than replacing the whole system, but is not always possible and some systems will need to be completely replaced. 3. Replace the whole system, including the pipework

A total upgrade will ensure complete compatibility with the latest refrigerants to hit the market. You can anticipate having smooth and seamless operation throughout the lifetime of their new units, which will usually be a decade or more. When you do the math, you’ll see just how attractive this option is. Upgrading will limit the risk of expensive repairs moving forward.
